Welcome to a new week! We found two new sites to try this week. Some of the items cost but many are free. Other items can be printed too. We are missing you all very much! Keep working hard kiddos!
https://wideopenschool.org/programs/family/prek-5/reading-writing/ https://www.kizphonics.com/ Happy Monday Morning!
Math Intervention will be joining our website. We have added a tab at the top where you can see messages and websites for math learning from Mrs. Voorhees. We hope you will take some time each week to practice your math and literacy skills with the activities and websites we have listed for you. We miss you all so much! I put a link under reading games/activities for 3rd--5th graders, or for anyone interested. If you click on the Scholastic Reading button you will find daily reading passages. You can read them yourself or on the side, you can have it read to you by pushing text to speech. After reading or listening to the passage, it has activities or questions you can try for fun. After the main passage there are some other ones listed for the day as well. There are some really interesting stories. I also put a button at the bottom for Wonderopolis. This is a wonderful site for practicing reading and for learning some amazing things through the daily wonders that kids have asked. My 5th graders have worked on this in class with me. You have vocabulary practice, reading practice, and comprehension practice. Check it out! Read and learn new things kiddos!
I hope everyone is safe and well. I miss you all so much. I hope you are reading, playing games, doing puzzles, and getting outside. I will post some ideas later this week. You can go to the READING GAMES section at the top for some practice of skills. There are some great things on there to do. Have a great day kiddos!
The literacy triangle is a visual that helps explain intervention and also helps us better recognize where specifically a student is struggling. We know that in order for students to read or spell they need to process all the key elements of a word - with lightning speed! They need to move from phonology (the sounds that make up the word) to orthography (the pictorial shapes we call letters) to semantics (meaning) in less than a second. Using this visual we are able to highlight the specific areas along the literacy triangle in which the student needs remediation. The fewer areas a student needs support, the quicker intervention is likely to go. If a student has several areas that need support and remediation it's bound to take a lot longer. So, by using this visual we are also able to help parents or other educators understand how impacted a student may be and that can help us to determine what amount of service time the student may need for literacy! We have a new intervention cycle that will be Oct.2-Nov. 3rd. We also look forward to meeting with parents at conferences.
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! We hope you had a great summer and that you spent some of your time reading. Please send back the summer reading logs as soon as possible. We will have our celebration on Monday for all those that completed them. Welcome Ms. Frotz! She has joined our literacy team this year. We our excited for a great year and look forward to seeing our kiddos.
Our new cycle of intervention will run from February 21-April 6th.
